There are so many different places to explore, why not make the most of your expat life in Croatia and head somewhere different nearly every weekend? Planning and looking for good hotels in advance will keep your expenses down and let you discover more and more of what the country has to offer. You could as well opt for a economical way to visit your favorite places, renting a motorbike to get around.
Here’s a few of Croatia’s must-see hidden gems you just have to visit.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Plitvice Lakes are like something you’ve only ever seen in a fantasy film; a magical place that you didn’t think could exist in real life. The mesmerising UNESCO World Heritage Site, hidden in the depths of the densely-forested national park, features 16 crystal-clear lakes with cascading waterfalls. Over thousands of years, the waterfalls have tumbled over limestone and chalk, forming natural dams and creating the tranquil lakes right in the centre of Croatia.
Zlatni Rat Beach
On the quaint island of Brac is the famous Zlatni Rat Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia. From the coastal road, you can look down over the beach and see its unique teardrop formation, which changes shape with the tides. Pick the best spot on the fine, white pebble-sand and soak up both the sun and the exceptional views out to sea.
Hvar Island
The long and narrow island of Hvar has a luxurious reputation and is a regular haunt for the rich and famous. The main port town is as charming as they come, with plenty of high-end eateries and bars for you to sit outside and watch the world go by. Climb the narrow streets up to the imposing fortress and you will be rewarded with the most incredible views of the marina.
The Dalmatian Coast road
Some of the highlights and best-hidden gems of Croatia can be found when travelling along its scenic coastal roads. The Dalmatian Coast from Split to Dubrovnik is one such road: it will have your jaw dropping at the beauty that unfolds with every twist and turn. The Makarska Riviera is a must to explore along the way, not least for all its peaceful bays and ancient towns.
Rovinj Old Town
Rovinj is a city in the north of Croatia with a must-see Old Town. Famous for its unique peninsula setting in the Adriatic Sea, every square inch of the medieval centre is occupied by traditional pastel houses and quaint cobbled streets. Despite being small, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to get lost in the labyrinth of footpaths and alleyways, but just follow the skyline to find the main focal point of the Old Town, St. Euphemia Cathedral. When you arrive, you can climb the 61-metre-high campanile and see as far as the Alps on a clear day.
